Guess what I discovered recently? Even developers, apparently, are susceptible to consumer opinion. Contrary to appearances, not every person in this country is comfortable in a rape and scrape development, and some developers are getting the message. Recently I have heard one or two developers say something like, "I'm leaving this because it helps to say we're a green development," or "We're willing to do this in order to tout this as a green development'. A concern I hear from these same people, however, is that there is no single recognized certification for "green development" I can see the signs, and I can hear their voices. We are close. They are willing to go the extra mile to spend a substantial amount extra or sacrifice some "developable" land if they can get some official certification to advertise themselves as a green development. We need to act soon. Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Audubon Society, local groups, whoever, need to get together to create a nationally recognized certification for a green development in order to encourage these developers that people want more, and are willing to pay more, for something better.
